Heritage, History, & Hometown Fun
Did you know that corn and bacon once played a role in our local history?
During the Battle of Mossy Creek on December 29, 1863, corn and bacon played a surprising but significant role. Confederate forces, camped near Panther Creek, were on a foraging mission to gather these vital food supplies from the fertile Jefferson County farms. Union troops at Mossy Creek, aware of their movements, clashed with them in a sharp winter battle. The skirmish was not only about military control but also about securing provisions—corn to feed horses and bacon to feed soldiers—illustrating how survival and sustenance were often as decisive as strategy in the Civil War.
During the Festival at Mossy Creek Station 2025, we hosted Heritage, History & Hometown Fun at Old City Hall with emphasis on our Fightin’ for Corn-n-Bacon heritage.
